Introduction to Ground Calcium Carbonate (GCC) - CaCO3

Ground Calcium Carbonate (GCC) is a naturally occurring mineral, primarily composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), derived from the earth's limestone, chalk, or marble deposits. It is produced by mechanically grinding the raw calcium carbonate into fine particles without changing the chemical composition. The particle size and shape can vary based on the grinding process, producing coarse to ultra-fine powder, typically ranging from micron to nanometer scale.

Applications of Ground Calcium Carbonate

1. Paper Industry

Filler and Coating: GCC is used as a filler in paper production to improve the paper’s brightness, opacity, and surface smoothness. It helps reduce production costs by replacing more expensive raw materials.
Whiteness: It increases the whiteness and printing properties of paper, especially in printing and writing paper, tissues, and packaging.

2. Plastic Industry

Filler in Plastics: GCC is used in plastics such as PVC, polyethylene, and polypropylene to enhance strength, improve thermal properties, and reduce production costs. It also improves the surface finish of plastic products.
Rigid PVC: In rigid PVC, like pipes and window profiles, it acts as a stabilizer and enhances stiffness.

3. Paints and Coatings

Pigment and Extender: GCC serves as an extender in paints and coatings, improving their brightness and reducing production costs while maintaining durability.
Gloss Control: It helps in controlling the gloss level and improving the opacity of paints.

4. Construction Industry

Cement and Concrete: GCC is used as a filler in cement and concrete to enhance the density and stability of construction materials, improving workability and reducing water demand.
Drywall and Plaster: It is used in the production of drywall and plasters, providing smooth surfaces and easy-to-sand properties.

5. Rubber Industry

Reinforcing Filler: In rubber products, GCC acts as a reinforcing filler, enhancing strength, elasticity, and durability. It is commonly used in tires, tubes, and industrial rubber products.
